I have always loved words. They have amazing power. They can comfort, amuse, and cajole. When artfully strung together words can, and have, changed the world forever. Now in this impetuous society full of texting and instant messaging, it seems increasingly important that upcoming generations be introduced to the power and majesty of an extensive vocabulary. Now, a bunch of talented women from the Detroit area are banding together to make that possible for local children by providing dictionaries.
This cool idea is powered by PositiveCities founder and blogger, Erin Rose, who has put together a collaboration of several of the area's most popular female bloggers to raise funds for this very worthy cause. Working with BMN's friends at Operation: Kid Equip they are using their talent and influence to raise money for dictionaries that are specifically written for third graders, who are at the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn.
Now, through March 15, 2010, the effort is raising money to provide roughly 2,700 third graders in Oakland County with brand new dictionaries, and we can all help. To give you an idea of the impact your dollars can make, a $20 donation can supply at least 8 third graders with dictionaries.
