Choose New Year's Goals Over Resolutions

by Lisa Diggs on Jan 01st 2011

Do you remember all of that talk about what we would do to celebrate the new millenium or prevent Y2K from destroying us all?  It makes it hard to believe that 2011 could possibly be upon us and yet here it is.

Reflecting upon the last decade, I easily recognize how much the world has changed.  I can hardly recall the innocence and robust economy of a pre-September 11th life.  Funny how it didn't seem particularly blissful then.  I guess that is so common among we flawed humans.  We rarely appreciate what we have until it is gone.  While I am not one for resolutions, changing that is a tempting one.

In lieu of resolutions, which seem to just mean a race to see how long we can last before breaking them, I instead favor goals.  They are specific and measurable.  They motivate us to keep trying rather than to wallow in the predestined, almost certain failure of a resolution.  Goals are also something we can share with others and ask them to help along the way...and so it is today with the Buy Michigan Now campaign.

In 2011, we would like to reach our long-standing goal of attracting 10,000 believers in Michigan to add their names to our pledge.  Each time a person demonstrates that commitment, they are more likely to keep it in the forefront of their minds as they make buying decisions, to educate others about what we can achieve together, and perhaps most important of all, to focus on positive solutions and growth, rather than the negativity which the media and our neighbors too often highlight for us.  As I write this, we have 5,600+ so it is a lofty aspiration to accomplish nearly as much in one year as we have since launching, and yet, I believe we can, with your help.

If you have not yet added your name, please do so.  All we ask is for a name, city, state, and zip code.  Providing an email address is purely OPTIONAL.  If you are not sure if you have already done it or not, DO IT.  I sort it and remove duplicate names regularly.  If you have already done it, THANK YOU!  Now I ask you to invite others.  Either go to our Pledge page and use our Tell a Friend tool to do it, or just send an email of your own.  Brag on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Peoplemovers that you have taken the pledge, and encourage others to join you for a brighter Michigan.  Host a pledge drive.  It's a fun and easy thing to do because we are not asking for financial donations, like traditional pledge drives, we are just asking for heightened awareness and belief.  It's a great, positive message to bring to schools, churches, college campuses, trade shows, expos, and businesses.  It can even create an exciting way to meet potential new clients.  If you are interested in becoming an ambassador for the campaign and hosting a pledge drive, please email me us via to learn how easy it is.

Another big goal for us in 2011 is to increase the number of businesses listed on our site to more than 5,000.  The more businesses listed, the more robust and useful the directory will be, making even more people likely to use it.  Again, at this moment, we are hovering around 2,500 businesses listed so this will be a big expansion.  If you don't have a business, or yours is already listed, you may be wondering how you can help.  Check and see if your favorite local businesses are listed yet.  Are your Michigan-based suppliers and clients listed?  If they are not, write them an email or give them a call, and invite them to get involved.

Often people write us to ask why a particular Michigan-based business is not listed.  Sometimes it is because we haven't heard of them yet, but more often it is because we have contacted them, but they have yet to take action.  All of the information in the Michigan Blue Pages directory is self-reported.  We do that so that it is more likely it will be kept up-to-date and reflect the current products and services of each business.  The downside is that it means some businesses we all wish were there simply aren't listed yet.  One thing we've learned though is that frequently companies are more likely to take that step if a customer of theirs invites them to do so.  Remember, one Basic listing is FREE for each business, so it is easy for all to participate.

We have many more goals in mind, several of which we will likely share along the way.  We know that this campaign is making a HUGE difference because every week you tell us in some way or another...yet there is so much more we can achieve together.  Please get involved and stand with us as we help Michigan's economy grow and create more jobs.  Unlike new year's resolutions, goals can be created every day of the year, so make some for yourself too, and if we can help you along the way, please let us know how.

Together we are revitalizing our state, one product, one purchase, one person at a time.
