MICHIGAN NONPROFITS GET HELP FROM LOCAL CAMPAIGN

Date: June 24, 2008

Livonia, MI (June 24, 2008) – Buy Michigan Now, a campaign designed to promote and restore Michigan’s economy, is expanding its website to provide new tools to help Michigan nonprofits and community groups throughout the state. The campaign’s website: www.BuyMichiganNow.com includes a Community page with Nonprofit Needs and Fundraising Opportunities features, as well as positive articles about the accomplishments of community groups.

Nonprofit Needs allows charitable and service organizations to list specific necessities that have gone unfulfilled, to make it easier for residents and businesses to help. According to campaign Founder, Lisa Diggs, “This tool was created to help connect worthy organizations with potential donors to fulfill specific needs. It is not meant for monetary requests, but rather for equipment, vehicles, materials, or services, that may be desperately needed by an organization, and yet available through generous businesses and individuals who would have otherwise been unaware of the demand.”

Fundraising Opportunities is a feature that is designed to allow Michigan-based businesses to share the details of their fundraising programs with community groups who are anxious to find fresh ideas to generate money. “Why not help groups raise money by selling great Michigan products, while simultaneously keeping all those dollars inside the state?” says Diggs. “It fits perfectly with our mission to encourage people to ‘Think Michigan First’.”

Elsewhere on the site is an online directory of Michigan-based organizations called Michigan Blue Pages. Named for the beautiful waters that surround the state, the Michigan Blue Pages have been added to help residents and businesses find Michigan-based organizations to meet their needs, thereby keeping more money inside the state.

Organizations must meet one of the following three Michigan Identification Criteria (MIC) in order to be listed:

  • Operates entirely in Michigan
  • Headquartered in Michigan with additional operations outside the state
  • Michigan-owned franchise or affiliate – some fees or revenue paid outside the state.

Organizations, including associations and nonprofits, that meet one of those criteria are invited to list themselves by creating an account and following the simple steps to build a listing. Each account is entitled to one FREE Basic listing.

The Campaign
Buy Michigan Now is a grassroots effort that was initiated in November of 2007 to help educate people of all ages about the benefits of buying locally and to stimulate positive thinking and actions in support of Michigan.

The Pledge
Buy Michigan Now also includes a Pledge to support Michigan-based organizations. Visitors to the site are encouraged to read the Pledge, and if they agree, add their name, city, and state, as a growing demonstration of support for Michigan businesses.

The Founder
Lisa Diggs is also founder of The Catalyst Company, a seven year old performance consulting agency, and is an alumnus of Michigan State University as well as the University of Michigan-Dearborn. As a nearly lifelong resident of Michigan she feels a deep sense of responsibility to promote, protect, and develop the state for future generations.
