DESCRIPTION:In his only recorded speech as territorial representative to Congress\, Father Gabriel Richard asked for funds to build a road from Detroit to Chicago on this day in 1824. He had been elected as a nonvoting delegate of the Michigan Territory to the U.S. House of Representatives for the 18th Congress. Father Richard was the first Catholic priest to be elected to that body\, serving a single term from 1823 to 1825. He successfully secured the first federal appropriation for the road\, which came to be known as Michigan Avenue.

SUMMARY:Mackinac becomes America's 2nd national park
DESCRIPTION:Just 3 years after its creation of Yellowstone National Park\, Congress designated Mackinac Island as the country’s second national park on this day in 1875. Senator Thomas Ferry introduced the strategic legislation. In addition to the island’s attractive history and natural features\, the U.S. government already owned much of the island as part of the Fort Mackinac military reservation. Ferry figured the soldiers stationed at Fort Mackinac could act as caretakers. As a result\, the park would cost almost nothing\, but would be a way to help preserve the island. Eventually\, the War Department refused to provide extra funding to pay the soldiers of Fort Mackinac to simply maintain and improve a national park. After 20 years\, the closure of the fort necessitated the end of Mackinac’s national park status. Instead\, the property was given to the State of Michigan and became its first state park.

DESCRIPTION:WWDT became the first television station in Michigan and the sixth station in the United States  to begin service\, on this day in 1947. A few weeks later it changed its call letters to WWJ-TV to match its radio broadcast sister station\, and is now known as WDIV Channel 4 in Detroit. The station would go on to produce the first telecast of Detroit Tigers\, Red Wings and Lions games as well as the state’s first televised newscasts.

SUMMARY:Thirteen former slaves organize Second Baptist Church in Detroit
DESCRIPTION:Second Baptist Church is the oldest black church in the Midwest\, and the first in Detroit. Thirteen  people who were escaped or freed slaves petitioned the legislature for a church on this day in 1836. They left the white-dominated First Baptist Church\, due to consistent racial discrimination. The new church would go on to play a significant role in helping to free slaves through the Underground Railroad. Second Baptist Church estimates that its members helped nearly 5\,000 people escape to freedom in Canada. This prominent church is still serving the Detroit community today.

SUMMARY:4 People die in riot at Ford Plant
DESCRIPTION:The automotive industry was hit hard by the Great Depression of the 1930s and many jobs were cut. The Detroit Unemployed Council and the Auto\, Aircraft and Vehicle Workers of America called for a protest march to demand change. On this day in 1932\, between 3\,000-5\,000 people set out from Detroit to Dearborn. The plan was to end at the Ford River Rouge Complex\, the company’s largest factory. The group marched peacefully\, until they arrived in Dearborn. The Dearborn police attempted to stop the march by firing tear gas into the crowd and began hitting marchers with clubs. The conflict escalated until police officers and Ford guards fired gunshots. Four people were killed on site and more than 60 injured\, one of whom succumbed to his injuries months later.

SUMMARY:Hundreds report UFO sightings over Lake Michigan
DESCRIPTION:People all along Michigan’s west coast reported seeing strange lights that many believed to be UFOs on this day in 1994. In a recorded conversation between law enforcement and a meteorologist from the National Weather Service\, the initially skeptical meteorologist changes his tune when he looks at the radar. He says\, “I’m getting it now at about 12\,000 feet\, it’s a pretty strong return. Oh my God what is this? Now I’m getting three of them and uh\, they’re about separated by about 5\,000 feet in height.” He continues\, “I’ve never seen anything like this\, not even when I’m doing storms. These aren’t storms.” Afterwards\, researchers were able to say that\, whatever it was\, it wasn’t a small plane\, gas\, a blimp\, weather balloon\, satellite\, shooting stars\, military aircraft or debris. To this day the appearance of these floating lights remains a mystery.

DESCRIPTION:On this day in 1932 Ford first began production of its revolutionary V-8. The powerful engine was the first of its kind to be designed for an affordable\, mass-marketed car. The secretive design process took place in a lab that was once part of Thomas Edison’s estate in Florida. Henry Ford had the building moved to Dearborn’s Greenfield Village in 1928. Inside\, a team of engineers worked tirelessly for years in an effort to eclipse Chevy’s V-6 engine. Eventually they came up with V-8 engine cast as a single block mold\, something that had never been accomplished before. Ford’s V-8 was affordable and able to reach speeds of up to 75 MPH\, making it a huge success for decades to come.

DESCRIPTION:Abolitionist John Brown liberated 11 slaves and led them to Detroit to seek freedom via a ferry to Canada. On this day in 1859\, he met with with Frederick Douglass and local abolitionists George DeBaptiste\, William Lambert\, and others at William Webb’s house in Detroit to discuss emancipation. Douglass favored peaceful means\, while Brown favored action. Later that year\, Brown led a raid on a federal armory located in present-day West Virginia. It resulted in his capture\, a highly-publicized trial\, and execution by hanging. Douglass wasn’t present during the raid but was viewed as a possible accomplice. For his own safety\, he fled to Canada until he was legally cleared.

UAW vice president Walter Reuther initially pushed for a 30% wage increase for workers\, but only secured a 17.5% increase. Still\, his agressiveness led to him becoming the union’s president.

SUMMARY:Legislature gives Governor power to supply men to Union army
DESCRIPTION:On this day in 1861\, the state legislature gave Governor Blair broad powers to furnish men “by draft\, voluntary enlistment\, or otherwise” to serve in a federal army in the event of a rebellion from Southern states. On April 12\, the Battle of Fort Sumter began the American Civil War. Soon after\, Blair met with state officials and prominent citizens to finance and equip an infantry regiment to respond to President Lincoln’s call for volunteers. Pledges for $81\,020\, which would be equivalent to about $80 million today\, were received. The state’s initial ninety-day volunteers\, known officially as the 1st Michigan Infantry\, were mustered into the United States Army on May 1.
