Wildfires kill hundreds across Michigan in 1871
The same day as the Great Chicago Fire, Michigan experienced a series of simultaneous wildfires on this day in 1871. It seriously damaged the towns of Alpena, Holland, Manistee and Port Huron, burning 2.5 million acres, leaving hundreds of families homeless.
