From automobiles to furniture to architecture, Michigan has had an impressive impact on our nation’s style from the late 19th century to the current day. The latest industry to build on the state’s stylish legacy is fashion. Design innovators like John Varvatos, Anna Sui, Kevan Hall, and Tracy Reese first discovered their flair for fashion in Michigan. Each has returned at some point to help inspire this growing local industry. Apparel is not just being designed here, but also produced. In recent years, the state’s creative, educational, and manufacturing entities have converged to create a vibrant fashion community. Several universities have fashion design and merchandising programs, and there is a resurgence in teaching sewing as a trade. Michigan is currently home to two fashion incubators, and a multitude of designers who are generating a style all their own.
