Aretha Franklin performs at President Barack Obama’s inauguration
January 20 @ 12:00 am
The nation’s first black president was inaugurated on this day in 2009, but the spolight was nearly stolen by Aretha Franklin’s stirring rendition of My Country Tis of Thee and moreover, by the hat she was wearing. It was a gray felt cloche that was topped with a giant, matching bow, outlined in rhinestones, and had been designed by her local favorite milliner, Luke Song of Mr. Song’s Millinery in Detroit. Franklin had long been a customer there, but when the eyes of the world saw this particular hat, it catapulted the small shop into a globally-know business.
