Burton I. Gordon, the head of the Michigan Civil Rights Commission, was murdered outside his car in a Detroit parking garage on this day in 1970. The event was only six years after the commission was created. Gordon aggressively strove to enforce the state’s civil rights statutes and made many enemies because of it. No one was ever convicted of his murder and many speculated he was assassinated because of his zeal for his work.
