A group of Detroit professionals formed a benevolent service club on this day in 1915. After some debate they name it Kiwanis Club, allegedly after a Native American term meaning “we get together.” It is the first Kiwanis Club in the world. Eventually there will be more than 8500 across 80 countries. Each year, Kiwanis clubs raise more than $100 million and report more than 18.5 million volunteer hours to strengthen communities and serve children.
