On this day in 1817, Michigan Territory Governor, Lewis Cass, and the Territory’s legislators, enacted a bill to establish a University of Michigania. The original academy consisted of one building in Detroit and allowed for students to get more training before they went on to one of the few actual American colleges, such as Harvard or Yale. It would later be based in Ann Arbor and known as the Univeristy of Michigan.
