Purple Rose Theatre Apprenticeships

Applications are open for new apprenticeships at the Purple Rose Theatre. This unique opportunity is designed to provide both knowledge and experience. The idea is to enhance and influence the rest of each participant’s career. It’s particularly ideal for individuals who may one day want to start or run a theatre company of their own.

All apprenticeships are purposefully general in nature. Participants will gain administrative, production, and artistic experience. Those are all of the elements that must truly be in top form for a theatre to thrive.

Apprentice Roles

Each Purple Rose Theatre participant will take on different assignments for each show. At times they  will be production/rehearsal assistant to the stage manager. while at other times, assisting the properties designer. Time may be spent as an assistant to the scene shop, master electrician, or sound designer. They will also serve as members of the production run crew, evening box office staff or house manager. Crew assignments are tailored to the specific interests of each individual apprentice, to the degree possible.

Apprentices are able to apply for Equity membership candidacy. Then earn points toward Equity membership. Points can be earned in two ways. The first is by either serving as production/rehearsal assistant to the stage manager. The next is by acting in, or understudying, a main stage production. The latter of which are occasionally offered to exceptional apprentices, but not guaranteed.

Application Process

Each apprenticeship is a full-time position, requiring an exclusive commitment for the duration of four productions, which is approximately 12 months. Because outside employment is not permitted, apprentices receive a modest living stipend; however, housing is not provided. Interested parties may apply online. Applications are due by March 23, 2018.
